Upon arrival, the city reveals a world of centuries-old palaces, vibrant piazzas, hidden passages and authentic Italian charm waiting to be explored. Here, guests can also discover Palazzo Venezia, another property of Villa d’Este La Collezione, home to Altariva Rooftop Bar & Restaurant, where refined cuisine and breathtaking lake views come together in an unforgettable dining experience.
As Rusco glides across the tranquil waters of the lake, the journey transforms the simple connection between Villa d’Este and Como into a memorable experience, allowing guests to arrive in the city while admiring the beauty and elegance of Lake Como along the way.
A Story Worth Telling, A Heritage Worth Preserving
Built in 1958 by renowned boatbuilder Guido Abbate for the Prefecture of Como, Rusco is a rare example of Italian nautical craftsmanship. Originally commissioned for official duties on Lake Como, the elegant wooden water limousine welcomed distinguished guests and international delegations, including British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.
In 2025, Villa d’Este launched an extensive restoration project in partnership with Tullio Abbate, led by Tullio Abbate Junior, grandson of the vessel’s creator. The restoration sought to preserve Rusco's original character, employing traditional boatbuilding techniques, restoring original metalwork and sourcing period-appropriate materials from around the world, including prized South African mahogany, sourced from South Africa and brought to Lake Como specifically for the project.
For Villa d’Este, the project reflects a long-standing commitment to preserving the heritage, craftsmanship and traditions of Lake Como. More than a historic vessel, Rusco embodies the region’s cultural identity and artisanal excellence.
Today, following its restoration, Rusco returns to the lake as part of Villa d’Este’s fleet, offering guests a unique opportunity to experience a living piece of Lake Como’s history.
