The Estate

Two iconic residences

Villa d’Este reveals its soul through two historic residences — masterpieces of elegance that mirror themselves in the still waters of the lake.

Between the Cardinal’s Building and the Queen’s Pavilion, 151 rooms welcome guests into a world where serenity and style narrate a story of enduring prestige.
Each corner of Villa d’Este is a chapter of beauty; every step, an immersion into the essence of a place that has inspired poets, artists and nobles for over five centuries.

Cardinal’s Building

Once the summer residence of Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, the Cardinal’s Building now forms the noble heart of Villa d’Este.
Designed in 1568 by Pellegrino Pellegrini, known as "Il Tibaldi", it houses 124 rooms and, on the piano nobile, our most exclusive suites: the Cardinal Suite and two Presidential Rooms.
Its majestic interiors host the main reception areas, including the lobby, the Conciergerie and the Bridge Room, as well as refined dining and event spaces: the Veranda Restaurant, Napoleon Room, Canova Bar, Flora Room, Empire Room and Column Room, alongside a boutique and hair salon.

Queen’s Pavilion

Built in 1856 by Baron Ippolito Ciani, the Queen’s Pavilion is named after Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales and owner of the Villa from 1815 to 1820. Originally known as “Hotel de la Reine d’Angleterre”, it was first conceived as a spa retreat. With its striking red trompe-l’œil façade, it soon became a symbol of exclusivity. The 27 rooms and suites, adorned in delicate pastel hues, offer privileged views of the lake from romantic balconies and private terraces. In 1873, the Pavilion became a beacon of prestige, welcoming luminaries such as Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini, hosted by Giovanni Ricordi — its very first guest.

Centuries-old gardens

A timeless stage of Baroque, Renaissance and Romantic inspirations unfolds across the ten-hectare park encircling the Villa — a botanical masterpiece shaped by art and harmony.

Villa d’Este’s gardens host a luxuriant botanical treasure: chestnut and magnolia trees, wisteria, citrus groves, camellias, cypresses and peonies flourish alongside sculpted hedges, fountains and mythological vistas.
Among them, the Fountain of Hercules and the Temple of Telemachus converse with nature itself. The park is proudly part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani network, celebrating Italy’s most remarkable green treasures.
