A day in Switzerland: Lugano and Locarno
After crossing the border, just a couple of miles away from Villa d'Este, one enters Switzerland driving throughout the green hills zigzagging Lake Ceresio with its steep, fjorded shores, emerald waters and its striking sights. On the way towards Lugano there are villages like Campione d'Italia, a little Italian enclave, known as the Las Vegas of Lombardy because of its Casinò Municipale.

Warm, palmy Lugano is an arty resort city piled between Monte Bré and Monte San Salvatore. Lugano is a city of art, from the late Gothic period and 19th and 20th centuries displayed at Museo Cantonale d'Arte whilst at Villa Favorita, once the home of Baron von Thyssen, one can admire the fabulous collection of the Old Masters.

Further up north, Locarno, a city known as a holiday resort as early as the Imperial Roman period, today is the headquarter of the International Film Festival, one of the top events in Switzerland which manages to transform Locarno into a cultural metropolis.

The Castello Visconteo, houses the Renaissance-style courtyard with its portico and loggia and a fresco depicting the Virgin Mary.

Also to be visited is Piazza Grande with its belle-époque style hotels, café bars and boutiques.
